I have been thinking of a way to get more visitor response, and thought that we could try this out. Once a week we are going to post a word / phrase to test your outdoor jargon. Remember, no cheating. We will let you know the meaning of the word / phrase on the next outdoor jargon post. Good luck!

Free-standing: A tree that is in the middle of the forest with no other tree like it around.
A body of water with no water coming in or out.
I know the answer b/c Clay told me. But if I did not then I would guess a trail marker of stones on the ground.
Hiking w/o the use of hiking poles. (i.e. Hey Bubba, you don't need those, we're gonna do it free-standin' today.)
